The Workday Release Simple Distance

Released in 2011

Simple Distance was a brief attempt I made to choose a musical lane and stay in it. Love in a Box had connected with people in such a strong way that I thought maybe I should write more music like it. I wrote all the songs on Simple Distance very, very quickly. I still think this EP is a lot of fun. I set out to do something very specific and I did it.

I’m fully aware now that I wrote these songs for other people and not myself. And before I had albums like City Lights, Dark Pacific, and Songs from a Sketchbook, it was actually hard for me to play these songs live because I felt like I wasn’t able to express myself authentically through them.

That being said, I experience this EP so differently now. I can’t even count how many emails I’ve received from people telling me this record was the soundtrack to their love stories, or that one of the songs was the track they chose for their first dance at their wedding. These songs have been filled with meaning for me in ways I never foresaw while writing them. I’m so grateful for that.

My favorite track on Simple Distance: Simple Distance

I actually titled the EP “Simple Distance” because it was the one song I wrote about something real going on in my life at the time. I remember thinking “Okay, I can release this EP full of cheesy songs so long as it’s titled after this song”. I love how wordy Simple Distance is. So. Many. Words. I still have a hard time catching my breath when I play it live. My favorite lyric in the song is “I’m running purely on persistence hoping faith will force forward each step”. I still feel that way at times!
